Creation: SC 97 appeared in 1925 or 1926 as new primary routing, running from SC 16 (now US 321) Chester east to SC 22 (now S-12-20/62 jct) Great Falls. This is the only SC 97.
Adjustments: About 1929, a separate piece of SC 97 was created, from SC 26 (now US 521-601) northwest to Liberty Hill, with a project road shown to connect directly to Great Falls.
In 1931, SC 97 was actually built from Liberty Hill to cross the Catawba River at Nitorlee, then as new primary to connect with existing SC 97 at Beckhamville. The old SC 97 route east into Great Falls became SC 97 ALT (now SC 99 and S-12-20).

By 1942, SC 97 had already been removed from S-12-527; S-12-781; S-12-510
In 1960, SC 97 was extended with US 321 Business through Chester, then replaced SC 907 to SC 5 (now S-11-687) Kings Creek.

In 1982, SC 97 was rerouted slightly at I-77's interchange, leaving behind S-12-318 and S-12-319.
Between 1981-87, SC 97 was placed on the Chester Bypass around to the east and north as an addition to SC 72-121 and replacing SC 132. The old route through town became SC 97 Bus (now just US 321 Bus).

In 2008, SC 97 was extended northeast replacing 0.4 miles of SC 5 out to the new alignment of SC 5.
Improvements: SC 97 was paved from Chester to Beckhamville in 1935, as well as the first several miles north of US 521-601.
The remainder of SC 97 in Kershaw County was paved in 1936.
SC 97 has been fully paved since 1937.
SC 97 was 4-laned on the US 321 multiplex south of Chester in 1964.
The Chester Bypass was 4-laned when SC 97 was placed on it.
Comment: SC 97 serves some lonely parts of Kershaw County and York County, but is a main thoroughfare in much of Chester County, connecting I-77 to both Chester and Great Falls.
