Creation: SC 170 appeared in 1931 as new primary routing, running from US 17 (now S-27-34) south of Hardeeville east to SC 33 (now SC 46). This is the only SC 172.
Adjustments: In 1939, SC 170 was extended east with SC 33 then north as new primary routing to end at the Jasper-Beaufort Line.
In 1940, SC 170 was extended north as new primary routing to end at SC 368 (now S-27-13) east of Coosawhatchie.
In 1942, SC 170 was extended northwest as new primary routing to end at US 17 Coosawhatchie.
In 1949, SC 170 was extended over S-27-12 (was SC 366 before) to SC 128 (now US 278) Gillisonville.
In 1958, SC 170 was rerouted to instead head east to US 21 Beaufort, replacing some of S-7-18 (once SC 169); new construction; some of S-7-27 (once SC 169); new construction across Chechessee and Broad Rivers and northeast to US 21. The old route through Coosawhatchie to Gillisonville became SC 462.
Between 1977-79, SC 170 was extended south replacing a bit of US 17 which was moved to its 4-lane alignment south of Hardeeville.
In 1995, SC 170 was extended south to Georgia, replacing US 17's long-time corridor to get there.

Improvements: SC 170 was paved by 1932 on its original short routing.
SC 170 was paved from SC 46 to today's US 278 in 1940.
SC 170 was paved from today's US 278 to the Beaufort County Line in 1948.
SC 170 was paved everywhere except between US 17 and SC 128 (current SC 336) in 1949.
SC 170 was finally fully paved in 1954.
SC 170's first multilaned affair occurred when it was multiplexed with US 17 south of Hardeeville in 1995.
SC 170 was multilaned from US 278 to US 21 in 2007-2008 (some officials erroneously show it multilane all the way to US 17).
Comment: SC 170's crossing of Lemon Island and the Broad River was very scenic as a 2-lane road.
Using the new US 278 alignment, Beaufort is now easily reached from I-95 NB via SC 170.
SC 170 passes through the Savannah River Wildlife Refuge right before it heads into Georgia.
