Creation: SC 177 appeared in 1961 as a renumbering of SC 77, running the way it does now. This is the 3rd SC 177.

SC 177 #1: Appeared in 1933 as new routing running from the NC Line above New Prospect south about halfway to Spartanburg.
In 1934, SC 177 was likely extended south to US 176-221 (now US 221-SC 56 jct) Spartanburg. In 1935, SC 177 was renumbered as part of SC 9. It is still SC 9 except in Spartanburg it is now a bit of US 221; SC 9 CONN; SC 9; Old Boiling Springs Rd (cutoff by I-85 Bus).
SC 177 #2: Appeared in July 1936 (SCDOT) as new primary routing, running from US 76/SC 2 near Ballentine northwest via Pomaria to end at US 176 (now SC 121) north of Newberry.
In 1950, SC 177 was removed from S-36-39/S-40-597 Capers Chapel Rd and put on current US 176; S-36-107 Holloway St in Pomaria and put on current US 176; removed from SC 219/abandoned routing and put on current US 176; removed from what is now abandoned routing through Bakers Crossroads and unpaved Larry Cope Rd opposite S-36-36/US 176 and placed on current US 176 (this moved its north end southward).
In 1951, SC 177 was renumbered as part of US 176.
