US 15 ALT #1: Perhaps the strangest route South Carolina has ever had is the first US 15 ALT. It is shown on official maps of SC and NC; Rand McNally; AAA; Gousha, etc. US 15 ALT appeared about 1937 as a southern extension of the US 15 ALT that ran from Creedmoor, NC south through Raleigh to Laurinburg, NC. In South Carolina, US 15 ALT was as far as I can tell a 100% duplex with US 15 from the North Carolina State Line down to US 15's end at US 17 (current SC 63) Walterboro. On official maps it was depicted as every other US 15 shield. Oddly, US 15 ALT was not shown on County maps, but it WAS posted.

In 1940, a US 15 ALT is shown in Hartsville running on a loop from the center of town east on Home Ave and north on Patrick Hwy back to US 15 at the SC 102 junction.
About 1942, another US 15 ALT appears as a short 0.6 miles loop off US 15 south of Mannville in the Ashwood area.
In 1947 or so, US 15 ALT was dropped from US 15. The Hartsville loop became S-16-18 (Home Ave is now S-18-10) and the Lee County loop became S-31-23 (now S-31-103).

US 15 ALT #2: Appeared in 1954 or so as a renumbering of SC 763 from US 15 (now S-43-5) Sumter through Lamar to Darlington, then followed US 52 back to US 15 at Society Hill.
In 1957, US 15 ALT became US 401. Today it is still US 401 except it used the US 401/SC 34 CONN and SC 34 inside the Darlington Bypass and the northern half of US 52 Business in Darlington.
