Adjustments: In 1949, US 521 was rerouted in Williamsburg County to run directly from Andrews to Salters and Greeleyville on its way to Manning. This was a replacement of SC 171 and some of SC 261. The old way via Kingstree became part of SC 377 and SC 261 (about half of the US 52 overlay has been rerouted over the BLack River Swamp). This shaved 5 miles off US 521's route.

Also in 1949, US 521 was given its routing around Alcolu, leaving behind US 301 CONN through Alcolu and S-14-401 near Harvin.

Between 1947-50, US 521 was moved to its bypass of Kershaw, replacing US 521 ALT. The old route through Kershaw became US 521 Business.

In 1961, US 521 was rerouted at the Sumter-Kershaw Line to run more directly towards Camden via new construction. This left behind S-43-2, S-28-2, and an extended SC 261.

Starting in 1974, US 521 is shown on Georgetown County maps extending east of US 17 on Highmarket St to the Georgetown waterfront, then east on St. James St back over to US 17 at the Pee Dee River Bridge. County maps back to 1953 imply it could have been like that back to then. US 521 was definitely posted with a double arrow from both directions on US 17 Fraser St throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. However I never saw any 521 postings where St James meets 17.
In 1987, US 521 received some of its bypass of Dalzell north of Sumter, leaving behind S-44-1342. US 521 used S-42-91 to get from the unfinished bypass back to original US 521.
In 1988, US 521 received the rest of the Dalzell bypass and SC 441 interchange leaving behind more S-44-1342.

Sometime after 1995 (last county map I have to show it), US 521 was truncated to US 17 Fraser St, leaving behind S-22-156 on Highmarket St and S-22-80 on St. James St. When I drove through there for the first time in a number of years in 2004, the double arrow had been replaced with a single arrow pointing west only.

In 2005, US 521 received its bypass of Andrews as a mix of new construction and an addition to SC 41. The old route through town became US 521 Business.

In 2009, US 521 was rerouted in Sumter to essentially bypass it to the west - Guignard Pkwy, then replaced US 15-521 CONN on Guignard Dr to US 76 Business northwest of Downtown. The old route became S-44-1496 on Manning Rd south of US 15; S-44-152 Manning Ave north of US 15; S-44-118 on Bartlette St; S-44-70 and US 76 Business on Washington St.

Improvements: Paved everywhere upon designation except Kingstree to Andrews
Kingstree to Andrews was paved in 1934
The first multilane sections of US 521 appeared by 1954: Its US 76 multiplex In 1964, US 521 was widened through Sumter to the then-US 15 split.
In 1967, US 521 was 4-laned on the Lancaster Bypass.
In 1974, US 521 was 4-laned: from SC 200 to Andrew Jackson State Park; Camden to SC 97; US 17 out to the railroad tracks 3 miles west of Georgetown.
In 1977, US 521 was multilaned from I-20 to Camden.
Between 1983-85, US 521 was 4-laned from A.J. State Park to just north of SC 75 Hancock.
In 1986, US 521 was 4-laned from SC 75 to the NC State Line
In 1987 and 1988, US 521 was 4-laned from US 76 north to just past SC 441 as the two phases of the Dalzell Bypass opened.
In 1988, US 521 was multilaned from US 17 ALT east to the 1974 widening end outside Georgetown.
In 2001, US 521 was 4-laned from US 17 ALT to Andrews.
In 2005, US 521 was multilaned from Greeleyville to the Clarendon Line (some maps eroneously show it to SC 261 near Manning); Manning to the Sumter County line.
In 2006, US 521 was multilaned on the new Andrews Bypass except for the SC 41 overlay; Sumter-Clarendon Line to Sumter.
Comment: US 521 is touted as an alternative route to the Myrtle Beach area from I-95 (via SC 261 in Manning). Half of 521 east of Manning is 2-lane, although it doesn't go through many towns.
There is a posted US 521 TRUCK for Camden that uses S-28-897 Ehrenclou Dr; S-28-45 Chestnut Ferry Rd; US 1-601/SC 34 W. DeKalb St; S-28-130 Springdale Dr/Boykin Rd
US 521 follows the Black River from the south side for a large portion of its Lowcountry routing.
US 521 is North Carolina's shortest US Route.
