Creation: In December 1979 Tennessee requested that I-275 replace I-75 from I-40 in downtown Knoxville out to I-640, where the rerouted I-75 would be. The request was meant to coincide with the completion of the western leg of I-640. AASHTO approved this in June 1980.

Improvements: Upon designation, I-275 was 6-laned from I-40 to Baxter Ave and 4-laned everywhere else.
About 2008, I-275 was fully 6-laned. This expansion also had all 3 interchanges between I-40 and I-75/640 be reconfigured from full cloverleafs to diamond interchanges.
New Exits Added: None.
Comment: Note that a nearly full interchange with 5th Ave just north of I-40 was removed in its entirety to make room for an expanded interchange with I-40 in 1982.
