Creation: Appeared in 1939 as part of the long-term national planning leading to the Interstate system.  Was numbered as I-75 in August, 1957.

Adjustments: The first segments of I-75 to open were from before the interstate system, in Chattanooga roughly between today's Exit 7 and Exit 11 and in Knoxville on the Magnolia St Expwy between Unaka St and today's I-275.
In Oct 1960, I-75 opened between I-40 and Baxter Ave in Knoxville
In May 1961, I-75 opened between US 41-76 and I-24.
In Dec 1961, I-75 opened from its I-40 split near Lenoir City to Liberty St in downtown Knoxville.
In Jan 1962, I-75 opened from Baxter Ave to I-640 in Knoxville
In Dec 1962, I-75 opened from I-24 to today's TN 320.

In December 1979 Tennessee requested that I-275 replace I-75 from I-40 in downtown Knoxville out to I-640, where the rerouted I-75 would be. The request was meant to coincide with the completion of the western leg of I-640. AASHTO approved this in June 1980.

When I-75 was placed on I-640 in 1980, that segment was 6 lanes. It appears by then I-75 was also 6 lanes from I-640 to Merchant Dr.
In 1985, I-75 was 6-laned on its entire I-40 overlay
Between 1986-93, I-75 was 6-laned from Georgia to US 41-76; 8-laned from US 41-76 to I-24.
Between 1986-97, I-75 NB was given a truck climbing lane between MM 14.5 and MM 16.2

Comment: The construction of I-140 prompted the removal of the interchange at Mabry Hood Rd
The Bridgewater Rd and Gallaher Hill Rd half-interchanges project resulted in the removal of a direct diamond interchange with Walker Springs Rd.
The Unaka St interchange at original west end of the Magnolia St Expwy appears to have been removed in the early 1970s
The area around the Hiawasse River is notorious for thick fog and accidents.
