Creation: Appeared in 1923 as an original state highway running which appears to have run a bit differently from its early route log descriptions. It appears it began at TN 32 (now TN 160) near Newport and ran to TN 34 (now US 11E Bus) Greeneville. Route logs used TN 9 near Newport and TN 34 near Greeneville both both of those descriptins do not seem to describe roads that actually existed.
| Adjustments: In 1927 or 1928, TN 35 was extended with TN 32 into Newport, then replaced TN 65 west to Sevierville and ending at TN 33 (now E Blount Ave) at the Gay St Bridge in Knoxville.
About 1930, TN 35 was removed from Kiser Loop near Russell Crossroad southwest of Greenville About 1932, TN 35 was removed from Bridge Chapel Rd/Old Sevierville Hwy, Clevenger Cutoff, Carson Springs Rd (cutoff by I-40), Coops Rd (no longer connects to)/Thurwood Dr from Jefferson County into Newport. In 1934, TN 35 was moved onto today's US 441 south out of Knoxville to nearly Seymour, leaving behond Sevier Ave; Davenport Rd (cutoff by James White Pkwy)/Haywood Ave/Sevierville Pike; In 1935, TN 35 was moved onto today's US 441 through Seymour to Sevierville, leaving behind Old Sevierville Pike, today's TN 338 and Old Knoxville Hwy (no longer crosses river)/Kilby St
In 1935, Tennessee tried to get US 25 ALT assigned to TN 35 between Knoxville and Sevierville. In 1939 or 1940, TN 35 was rerouted at Seymour to head to Maryville instead of Knoxville, which was a route swap with TN 71. TN 35 ended at current TN 447.
In 1963, TN 35 was placed on its current route through Sevierville and east to nearly Birds Crossroad. The old routing used Parkway, Park Rd, Eastgate Rd (no longer connects to)/Old Newport Hwy (no longer connects to)/TN 416, another long Old Newport Hwy (partly uses today's TN 339) About 1965, TN 35 was extended through Greeneville replacing TN 93 out to the new US 11E bypass. In 1967, TN 35 was removed from Old Newport Hwy through Caney Branch and (no longer connects to) Fallen Bridge Rd at the Nolichucky River crossing. In 1975, TN 35 was removed from a bit of Rock Hill Rd, removed bridge over French Broad River and Old Greeneville Hwy. About 1982, TN 35 was extended northwest replacing TN 73 from Maryville to Alcoa. In 2007, TN 35 was removed from Sable Rd (no longer connects to)/Carter Valley Rd; Old Parrottsville Hwy east of Cloud Way well east of Parrottsville About 2010, TN 35 was removed from Cloud Way and Old Parrottsville Hwy west through Parrottsville In 2015 or 2016, TN 35 was removed from a lengthy Old Hwy 411 from US 25W-70 westward.
Posting: TN 35 is primary routing everywhere. TN 35 is only posted between US 129 and US 411 in Maryville Secret US Route Overlay: US 411 (40.9 mi) US 321 (26.9 mi) Comment: TN 35 is an alternative routing from Maryville to Newport without going near Smoky Mtn National Park or the traffic-challenged areas of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge |
