Creation: Appeared in 1949 or 1950 running from US 70N Cookeville to TN 53-85 (across from Anderson Ln at Roaring River Recreation Area) near Gainesboro.
Adjustments: In 1970, TN 136 was straightened out at the Roaring River crossing leaving behind completely abandoned and winding alignment. In 1972, TN 135 north was extended west replacing TN 53-TN 85 for 0.6 miles to the rerouted TN 53-85.
In 1983, TN 135 was extended both directions - north with TN 85 and TN 56 to Whitleyville, then north to TN 52 Oak Grove; south to TN 111 (now Burgess-Matthews Hwy) well north of Sparta
In 1987, TN 135 was straightened out at the Blackburn Creek crossing north of Dodson Branch, leaving behind some of Blackburn Fork Rd south of the creek. Also in 1987, TN 135 was removed from the Burgess Falls Dam and moved to a more direct crossing of Falling Water River. In 1988, TN 135 was extended south to its current end point. The original end was roughly where Duck Pond Rd meets Burgess-Matthews Hwy. TN 135 no longer had access to TN 111 with this change except via TN 289, as it used Old Cookeville Rd and Duck Pond Rd across TN 111. In 2012, TN 135 was rerouted off Old Cookeville/Duck Pond to use more Burgess-Matthews Hwy, then through a newly constructed interchange with TN 111 connecting directly with Burgess Falls Rd.
