WV 40: Appeared in 1922 as new primary highway, running from WV 53 (now CR 33/16) Harman north to WV 58 (now US 48-219) Thomas.
Between 1929-31, WV 40 was replaced by WV 32. This highway was in the process of being modernized so it is unclear if this happened while still WV 40, but the routing WV 40 followed for nearly its entire lifetime included the lengthy CR 35 through Cortland and CR 32/14 at Canaan Heights. WV 40 also used now bypassed segments: CR 32/5 at Harman; WV 72 to Red Creek; CR 45/3 then CR 35/19 which ends at Canaan Valley State Park; the N-S portion of Park Rd 817 which no longer exits the north end of the park;
