WV 40: Appeared in 1922 as new primary highway, running from WV 53 (now CR 33/16) Harman north to WV 58 (now US 48-219) Thomas.
Between 1929-31, WV 40 was replaced by WV 32. This highway was in the process of being modernized so it is unclear if this happened while still WV 40, but the routing WV 40 followed for nearly its entire lifetime included the lengthy CR 35 through Cortland and CR 32/14 at Canaan Heights. WV 40 also used now bypassed segments: CR 32/5 at Harman; CR 22/8, CR 43/14, abandoned CR 43/19 and WV 72 from Dryfork to Red Creek; CR 45/3 back over to WV 32.
