Creation: Appeared in 1922 as new primary routing, running from WV 4 (now WV 39) Summersville east to Richwood. This is the only WV 39.
| Adjustments: In 1932, WV 39 was extended east as new primary routing to WV 24 (now US 219) below Marlinton.
In 1938, WVDOH studied requesting replacing WV 39 from Summersville to Fenwick with an unspecified US route number. It is unclear if they formally requested this or not but it obviously did not happen. In 1941, WV 39 was extended north with US 219 into Marlinton then east replacing WV 28 to Minnehaha Springs, then replaced WV 43 to Virginia.
In 1947 (bridge date), WV 39 was removed from CR 11 (now WV 28) and CR 39/3 at Huntersville. Between 1947-49, WV 39 was extended west to Gauley River, replacing US 19.
In 1952 (bridge date), WV 39 was removed from CR 39/5 Minnehaha Springs.
Improvements: Between 1926-28, WV 39 was paved from Fenwick to Richwood Between 1933-35, WV 39 was paved from Summersville to Fenwick. Between 1940-46, WV 39 was paved from Richwood to Mill Point The 1941 extension to Virginia had WV 39 paved to Minnehaha Springs. The late 1940s extension to gauley Bridge was already paved when WV 39 was placed on it. WV 39 was paved from Minnehaha Springs to Virginia between 1950-56. There are no multilane segments on WV 39. Comment: WV 39 passes through some rugged territory between Richwood and Marlinton. |
