Creation: Appeared in 1922 as new primary routing, running from WV 4 (now WV 39) Summersville east to Richwood. This is the only WV 39.
Adjustments: In 1932, WV 39 was extended east as new primary routing to WV 24 (now US 219) below Marlinton.

In 1938, WVDOH studied requesting replacing WV 39 from Summersville to Fenwick with an unspecified US route number. It is unclear if they formally requested this or not but it obviously did not happen.
In 1941, WV 39 was extended north with US 219 into Marlinton then east replacing WV 28 to Minnehaha Springs, then replaced WV 43 to Virginia.

In 1947 (bridge date), WV 39 was removed from CR 11 (now WV 28) and CR 39/3 at Huntersville.
Between 1947-49, WV 39 was extended west to Gauley River, replacing US 19.

There are no multilane segments on WV 39.
Comment: WV 39 passes through some rugged territory between Richwood and Marlinton.
