Previous WV 79's:

1926 ROUTE LOG
WV 2: 0 - 0
Pennsylvania State Line: 3.0 - 3.0

1960 ROUTE LOG
WV 10: 0 - 0
Boone-Wyoming Line: 9.3 - 9.3
US 119: 33.9 - 43.2
WV 79 #1: Appeared 1925 (WVDOT annual report) as new primary routing, running from WV 2 (now CR 5) Chester east to Pennsylvania at PA 538.
In 1927, WV 79 was renumbered as US 30. Today the western part of old WV 79 is not part of WV 2.
i have not yet found a map that shows WV 79 but it is explicitly shown in the 1927 Annual Report of the State Highway Commission.
WV 79 #2: Appeared in 1933 as new primary routing running from US 119 (now WV 17) Madison south and eat to WV 3 Whitesville.
About 1957, WV 79 south was rerouted at Van to instead replace CR 11 south to Bald Knob. The old route to Whitesville became WV 78 (now CR 26 from Van to Bandytown; CR 26/1 then east about 4 miles is no longer a road; CR 3/15 through Blue Pennant to Whitesville). Also around this time it appears a separate piece of WV 79 was born from WV 10 Oceana northeast replacing CR 2 and 2/1 to Kopperston. I have only seen topo maps with this scenario - I have no other maps from 1950-60 to see if an WVDOT source confirms this.
By 1960, the two pieces of WV 79 were connected, mostly as new construction but also replaced Wyoming CR 2/2 and parts of Boone CRs 11 and 11/2.
About 1961, WV 79 was renumbered as WV 85.
It seems like there should have been an earlier WV 79 but I cannot locate one...
