WV 85 #1: Appeared 1928 (WVDOT annual report) as new primary routing running from WV 24 (now US 219) Union east to WV 81 (now WV 311) Sweet Springs.
In 1931, WV 85 was renumbered as part of WV 3.
WV 85 #2: Appeared in 1935 as a renumbering of WV 41 from US 19-21 (now WV 16) Fayetteville through the New River Gorge to US 60 Lookout. Between 1947-49, WV 85 was renumbered as WV 82. Today it is CR 82.
WV 85 #3: Appeared between 1947-49 as a renumbering of WV 82 from the Virginia line at Pocahontas southeastward back into Virginia near Fall Mills. There was also a very brief incursion into/out of Virginia near the north end of the Mercer County segment. Also a segment of WV 85 was created as an upgrade to CR 15 from the Virginia line northwest of Pocahontas to Kennon, then over CR 13 to end at US 52/WV 16 Welch. About 1959, WV 85 was renumbered as WV 102. The segment from Welch to Pocahontas is now WV 103, a little WV 161, and CR 84. In 1949 Virginia rejected putting SR 659 between the Welch segment and existing then-VA 85 to make a continuous route 85.
