Creation: Appeared in May 1933, the same year it first appeared nationally, running from Danville to Reedville via Halifax, Burkeville, Richmond and Tappahannock. In this routing, US 360 replaced:

VA 12 from Danville to Halifax
US 501 from Halifax to Burkeville
US 60 from Burkeville to Richmond
VA 13 from Richmond to Callao
VA 607 from Callao to Reedville.

Note that Virginia had applied for this corridor as US 33 first, after originally in the 1933 draft log slating US 221 to cover the portion from Burkeville to Reedville and VA 40 from Burkeville to Danville.

Here is a more detailed look at the history of US 360 from a geographic standpoint.

Danville to Keysville
US 360 initially began at the US 29-58 jct in Danville, then located at N. Main St and today's US 58 Bus. US 360 followed today's N. Main up to today's VA 293-360 and followed VA 360 heading out of Danville, except it used Justin Ln (now ends at the RR) and "Old Hwy 360" (cut off by US 29 freeway).
US 360 followed today's VA 360 through Halifax to today's US 360-VA 344-VA 360 junction, then picked up today's US 360. US 360 then used today's VA 92 through Clover and back across 360 over to US 15 Barnes Crossroads. US 360 then picked up US 15 north back to today's US 360.
US 360 followed modern 15-360 to Ontario except it used SR 713 in the VA 47 area and SR 622 leading into Ontario. US 360 then followed today's US 15-360 Business through Keysville.
Adjustments: I cannot find a specific reference but US 360 was put on its modern alignment in the VA 47 area not long after 1933, leaving behind what is now SR 713.
I cannot find a specific reference but the Jan 1958 Charlotte county map shows US 15-360 on its modern alignment just south of Ontario, leaving behind an extended SR 622.
In Oct 1966 (CTB), US 15-360 was given its bypass of Ontario and Keysville, leaving behind US 15-360 Business.
In Nov 1968 (CTB), US 360 was placed on its current routing bypassing Clover and Barnes Corner, leaving behind an extended VA 92 and the US 15 duplex.

In Sep 1982 (CTB), US 360 was rerouted to run to Danville via South Boston instead of Halifax. This was accomplished by replacing VA 304 and duplexing with US 58 west of South Boston. Virginia requested to AASHTO that the old path via Halifax be labeled as US 360 ALT but for unknown reasons was denied. The old route through Halifax became VA 360.

Keysville to Richmond US 360 then followed modern US 360 east past Simplicity, then used today's SR 701 to Meherrin where it picked back up today's US 360.
US 360 followed today's 360 until outside Burkeville, where it picked up SR 621 Burkes Tavern Rd east to SR 716 Namozine St east, then US 360 Business 2nd St.
US 360 followed today's US 360 corridor northeast from Burkeville (a few bits of old alignment are visible from the 4-lane alignment today). US 360 used SR 671 through Jetersville and SR 697 through Maplewood but otherwise today's US 360. Approaching Amelia, US 360 veered north on SR 656 S. Amelia Ave and used that to Amelia CH.
US 60 picked up today's US 360 Business heading east from Amelia CH. It continued on Goodes Bridge Rd past US 360 which loops back around to US 360. US 360 used US 360 east to Chesterfield County except at SR 604 it used Mt. Olive Ln and near VA 153 it used SR 698 Circle Dr.
In Chesterfield County, US 360 followed current US 360 all the way to Richmond.

Adjustments:About 1936, US 360 was placed on its modern routing between Simplicity and Meherrin, leaving behind SR 701. This removed US 360 from Lunenburg County except two segments (near Virso and near Meherrin) the EB lane was still in Lunenburg.
In 1939, US 360 was routed fully on current US 360 Business through Amelia, leaving behind SR 656.
In 1951 (bridge date), US 360 was removed from SR 621 and was placed on today's US 360 to US 360 Business into Burkeville. For a time, US 360 crossed over US 460 (on today's SR 716) without intersecting and they met at today's SR 716/US 360-460 Business split.
In Aug 1958 (CTB), US 360 was placed on its modern routings around Jetersville (leaving SR 671) and Maplewood (leaving SR 697).
About 1962, US 360 was removed from SR 728 and the SR 630 loop at Meherrin and placed on new routing to its south, giving US 360 a short stretch once again wholly inside Lunenburg County.
In Nov 1969 (CTB), US 360 was placed on its bypass of Burkeville leaving behind US 360-460 Business.
In October 1966 (CTB), US 360 was placed on its bypass of Amelia CH. leaving behind US 360 Business and Goodes Bridge Rd.

Also around 1966, US 360 received its modern routing through eastern Amelia County leaving behind Mt. Olive Ln and SR 698.
In Nov 1969 (CTB), US 360 was placed on the Burkeville Bypass, leaving behind US 360-460 Business.

Richmond
US 360 has always used Hull St down to the Mayo Bridge. North of the James River, US 360 initially followed 14th St to Main, then west to 13th, then north to Broad St. US 360 followed Broad east to 21st, then north to Mosby St to Mechanicsville Tpk.
In 1949, US 360 was rerouted to leave Broad north on 17th St to Fairfield Ave east to Mechanicsville Tpk.
In March 1956 (CTB), US 360 was rerouted on 14th to head -east- on Main over to 18th, then north to Grace for one block west, then north on 17th across Broad and so on.
In 1975, US 360 was placed on one-way splits with 17th and 18th Sts between Grace and near Fairfield.

Richmond to Reedville
US 360 historically used its current route into Henrico County, then US 360 Business through Mechanicsville. Then the route picked up modern 360 again east to Manquin, then used SR 661 and SR 662 through Central Garage.
US 360 then used modern 360 through Aylett east to VA 14 where it used today's SR 677. East of VA 14, US 360 followed it modern route t oUS 17 except for today's SR 691 at Piscataway Creek. US 360 then followed it current routing with US 17 into Tappahannock.
East of Tappahannock, US 360 followed its current route through Warsaw to Heathsville except it used SR 649 on the western side of Warsaw and SR 697 at Indian Field.
East of Heathsville, US 360 initially used today's 360 but veered off onto SR loops at Avalon, Blundon Corner, Lilian, Beverlyville and Reedville. The route originally ended at the Cul-D-Sac at the current end of SR 644.

Adjustments:
In July 1939 (CTB), it appears US 360 was put on its modern routings at Avalon and Blantons Corner, leaving behind SRs 694 and 695.
In August 1941 (CTB), it appears US 360 was placed on its modern routings in Lilian and Beverleyville.
In Sept 1948 (CTB), it appears US 360 was put on its modern routing at the northern end of Reedville, leaving behind SR 726.
In Aug 1951, the CTB turned down the request of Northumberland County to make SR 657-677 a primary route. This almost certainly would've been an extension of US 360.
In May 1954 (CTB), US 360 east was truncated 0.43 miles from the Reedville waterfront to its current end at SR 644.

It appears that in Nov 1957 (CTB), US 360 was placed on its current routing through Manquin and Central Garage, leaving behind SRs 661 and 662.
I cannot locate the reference, but the Jan 1958 Richmond County map shows US 360 no longer using SR 649 in Warsaw.
In Aug 1958 (CTB), US 360 was placed on its modern routing between Pauls Crossroads and Henley Fork, leaving behind SR 691.
It appears that in 1962 US 360 was rerouted at VA 14, leaving behind SR 677.
In Sept 1968 (CTB), US 360 was placed on its Mechanicsville bypass, leaving behind US 360 Business.
