US 301 ALT #1: Appeared Jan 1945 (CTB) explicitly defined to use Crater Rd from Sycamore (then-US 301) over to US 460, then with US 460 and VA 36 to reach the Appomattox River bridge and mainline 301. The section from US 301 to US 460 on Crater Rd was a replacement for VA 299. This may have started out as VA 301 ALT first.
In Aug 1951 (CTB), US 301 ALT was renumbered as mainline US 301. US 301 ALT is shown but not labeled on official maps (Petersburg insets did not exist during these years)
