Creation: Appeared as a newly numbered route utilizing 1.53 miles of the W&OD bed in Sept 1937 (CTB), running from US 29-211 Lee Hwy east of Military Rd (curr VA 309) only to VA 9 Glebe Rd (curr VA 120). This
is the 2nd VA 309.
Adjustments: By 1941, VA 309 was extended out to the Fairfax-Arlington Line In May 1948 (CTB), VA 309 was extended into Fairfax County over SR 738 to VA 123 (curr SR 3547). In 1960-61, VA 309 and US 29-211 swapped alignments, such that 309 crossed under 29-211 and looped east around to 29-211 about a mile later. In April 1964 (CTB), VA 309 was extended further west over SR 738 to the rebuilt VA 123, whcih was moved in Sept 1963. Improvements: VA 309 has been paved since designation The brief US 29 multiplex created in the 1960-61 switch was 4-laned at that time. The piece between SR 3547 (old VA 123) and VA 123 was multilaned by 1994. No other multilane segments are shown on the 2005 Official Map.
