VA 312 #1: Appeared in January 1923 (CTB Minutes). Originally ran from VA 31 (current SR 671) Coatesville to Gum Tree.
In May 1925 (CTB Minutes), VA 312 was extended north to VA 31 (current SR 608?) replacing what had been original VA 1/31's original routing, as VA 31 was relocated to present US 1's corridor. By 1927, VA 312 was extended northeast to the newer routing of VA 31 (curr US 1) Four Mile Fork, replacing an older alignment of VA 31 in Spotsylvania. In August 1928, VA 312 was renumbered as VA 51. Today, the original VA 312 is SR 738 and the last extended piece is now VA 208.
VA 312 #2: Appeared in August 1928 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 18 (curr US 29) Amherst north 2 miles towards the Tye River. In August 1929 (CTB Minutes), VA 312 was extended north 2.74 miles. In December 1930 (CTB Minutes), VA 312 was extended north 5.36 miles. In June 1931 (CTB Minutes), VA 312 was extended north 2.15 miles to Colleen. Without ever connecting to VA 18 (current VA 56) near Colleen, VA 312 was renumbered as VA 150 in July 1933. Today it is partly US 29 and partly SR 739. VA 312's northern endpoint is on today's US 29 in between its two SR 655 junctions.
VA 312 #3: Appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of VA 33 #2. Was in 2 pieces: 1. VA 35 Courtland to the Blackwater River east of US 460 Ivor 2. a short stub from VA 158 (curr US 258 Bus) Smithfield to the Septa area. In May 1943 (CTB Minutes), piece 2 was downgraded to SR 626. Also, piece one east of US 460 was downgraded to SR 616. The rest of VA 312 was downgraded to SR 616 in April 1951 (CTB).
