In 1940, SC 63 was truncated to SC 28 Varnville, leaving behind SC 28 (now US 278) and SC 36 (now US 601).

In 1937, SC 63 was paved from Hampton to Furman
In 1939, SC 63 was paved from Varnville to Walterboro.
SC 63 was 4-laned from I-95 to where it leaves US 17 ALT in downtown Walterboro in 1979.
Comment: SC 63 serves as the main way to get from I-95 NB to Walterboro. Otherwise, SC 63 is a sleepy ride through some empty spaces.
