US 21: 0 - 0 US 21 Bus: 3.0 - 3.0
|
Creation: SC 281 appeared by 1929, running from SC 28 (now US 21 Bus) Beaufort south to Port Royal. The 1926 Official implies this might have been a SC 30x route first. This is the 2nd SC 281.
| Adjustments: In 1936 or 1937, SC 281 was rerouted at Port Royal to head southwest as new routing to end at SC 280 and the Parris Island Access Rd. The old route into Port Royal became SC 281 ALT (now just Paris Ave). In 1958, SC 281 was extended west over SC 280 to Shell Point, then southwest as new construction to end at SC 170 near the new Broad River Bridge.
In 1982, SC 281 was rerouted to end again in Port Royal, replacing SC 281 SPUR down Paris Ave. The route southwest to SC 170 became part of SC 802 (today this is SC 128 and US 21). In 1990, SC 281 was eliminated when US 21 was placed on it above SC 802. SC 281 on Paris Ave became S-7-5 (unnumbered today). In 2012, SC 281 was brought back to run between US 21 and US 21 Bus along Ribaut Rd, replacing a rerouted US 21 Bypass.
Improvements: SC 281 was fully paved in 1934 or 1935. The extension to SC 280 was paved in 1940. Ribaut Rd was multilaned in 1971. Comment: The stub to Port Royal in the 1980s WAS posted. | Previous SC 281's:

SC 281 #1: Existed at most 1924-25 as new primary routing from SC 28 (now SC 125) near Ellenton east to SC 37 (current US 278) Barnwell.
By 1926, SC 281 was renumbered as part of SC 64. Today, it is the 6 westernmost miles of SC 64 and all of SRS Route B.
