Creation: Appeared in 1923 as an original state route, running from TN 1 Huntingdon to TN 5 (now US 45E Bus) Martin
| Adjustments: In 1925 or 1926, TN 22 was extended northwest to TN 3 (now S. 5th St) Union City, replacing TN 41.
In 1927, Tennessee tried to get TN 22 into the US highway system between Huntingdon and McKenzie In 1927 or 1928, TN 22 was extended south through Lexington to end at TN 5 (now TN 365) Henderson, replacing TN 44. About 1930, TN 22 was removed from Moody St south of Huntingdon and straightened out south to Clarksburg. In 1931, TN 22 was removed from Huntingdon St/Old Huntingdon Rd/abandoned routing/Wilson Rd north out of Lexington; abandoned alignments east of TN 22 north of Bud Crockett Dr; abandoned alignments west of TN 22 north of about Cody Hill Rd/Beaver Creek Ln; part of Expressway Church Rd In 1931 or 1932, TN 22 south was rerouted at Jacks Creek to instead head southeast to near Savannah then south through Shiloh Battlefield to the Mississippi Line below Acton. This was a replacement of TN 17. The old route to Henderson became Main St and Mifflin Ave in Henderson; Jacks Creek St/Jacks Creek Cove (cutoff by modern TN 100)/Old Jacks Creek Rd It is unclear if TN 22 ever used Cemetery Rd north out of Enville but stopped doing so by 1936 if it did. By 1938, TN 22 was given one-way splits north of the Huntingdon Square - NB using the original route on Paris St and SB using W. Paris St. Each alignment was only one-lane wide. Also by 1938, TN 22 was removed from Main St between Pikeville St intersections in Dresden. In 1939 or 1940, TN 22 was extended north through Union City with US 51, then as new routing to Tiptonville, then north to the Kentucky line above Cates. I'm guessing that in the 1940s, TN 22 was removed from Republican Cir and Moss Cir north of Enville; Rhodes Ln/Middle Fork Access Rd below Middle Fork. Also in the 1940s, TN 22 was removed from Miles Rd west of Dresden which used to connect back to current TN 22 near Latta Rd. About 1944, TN 22 was removed from abandoned roadway south of Snake Creek; the eastern half of Snake Creek Loop, a bit of caney Branch Rd, Sheffield Rd; Angotti Rd in Crump. Between 1947-51, TN 22 was rerouted at Crump to follow US 64 west to Adamsville then north as new state routing to Milledgeville. The old route became part of TN 69. Southeast of Morris Landing is just Coffee Landing Rd today. In the 1949-53 timeframe, TN 22 was rebuilt west of Union City. Surviving old pieces: County Home Rd/Tower Rd/Troy Hickman Rd; Troy Hickman Rd/Bonnie Hickman Rd; Freeman Store Rd; Coleman Rd; Killian Rd; Old Clayton Rd; Possum Trot Rd/abandoned routing/Bob McCain Rd; tiny bit of today's TN 157; part of Bogus Hollow Rd; Foothill Rd to Lassiter Corner; TN 21 In the early 1950's TN 22 was removed from S. Home St and Jackson St in Union City to instead use Reelfoot to S. 5th directly. In 1958, TN 22 was placed on new routing around Milledgeville and directly north to Lexington. The old route became TN 22A except the bit between TN 22-69 south split no longer crosses White Oak Creek to Main St on the other side; TN 22 used Rush St and Purdy St at the north end of the new routing.
Also in 1958, it appears TN 22 was removed from Ayers St/Holley St/Main St heading into Lexington. Also in 1958, TN 22 was placed on new construction from US 79 northeast of McKenzie to bypass Gleason and Dresden. The old route became TN 124; Elm St/Euclid Ave out of McKenzie; Old SR 22; Cedar St through Gleason (no longer connects to); Evergreen St; Linden St/Locust St/Poplar St into Dresden; TN 89 out of Dresden; today's TN 239. About 1971, TN 22 was removed from 5th St and Main St in Union City to instead continue west on Reelfoot to the new US 51 Bypass west of Union City. In the mid 1970s, TN 22-142 was placed on a new road bypassing the west of Shiloh Battlefield. Originally the route used Hamburg-Savannah Rd; Confederate Rd; Corinth Rd; abandoned roadway to the village of Shiloh. In 1983, TN 22 replaced TN 22 Byp around the west of Huntingdon. The route through town is now TN 22 Business. Maps and postings in the field continue to use the TN 22 Byp designation. In 1989, TN was placed on new freeway bypassing Martin and running to nearly Union City. The old route through Martin and beyond became TN 431 Between 1990-93, TN 22 was removed from Huntingdon-McKenzie Rd in Bethel. Also between 1990-93, TN 22 was given its bypass around the east of McKenzie leaving behind Woods Ln, more TN 124, and its US 79 overlay.
In 1999, TN 22 was removed from Lexington St south of the Huntingdon Loop. In 2002, the Tennessee Senate passed a resolution to have I-169 be assigned to TN 22 from union City to Martin but this did not pass the state House of Representatives (per Interstate Guide.com). In 2004 or 2005, TN 22 was placed on more new freeway around the east of Union City and added to the existing US 51 bypass back around to TN 5-22. The old route through Union City became more TN 431, and the connector between the two that TN 22 had been temporarily using became TN 22 CONN. In 2014, TN 22 was removed from Lake St (remains TN 21) and cedar St in Tiptonville to instead follow TN 78 north a short distance and new construction northwest.
Posting: TN 22 is posted as primary except north of TN 78 where it is secondary Surprisingly, TN 22 is not posted on its TN 21 overlay on the eastern end Secret US Route Overlay: US 70 (1.6 mi) US 70A (1.5 mi) Comment: TN 22 is a major route in Tennessee and has been multilaned essentially from Lexington to Union City TN 22 is the only way to reach the portion of Kentucky it ends at. KY 313 used to be on the other side to a now-closed ferry to New Madrid MO. |
