Creation: An original state route in 1923, running from the Alabama line at South Pittsburg via Jasper and Valdeau to end at TN 2 (now 8th St) Chattanooga.
Adjustments: In 1926, US 72 was added to TN 27 from Alabama to Kimball and US 41 was added to the rest of TN 27 through Whitwell to Chattanooga.
By 1930, TN 27 was extended south to 11th St in Chattanooga, replacing a bit of US 11/TN 2.
In 1931 or 1932, US 41 was removed from TN 27, but US 27 was assigned to TN 27 from Valdeau to Chattanooga.
In 1934, TN 27 was extended with the newly extended US 27 south through Chattanooga to the Georgia line at Rossville GA. It appears that US 41W from Rome GA north to Chattanooga was not recognized by Tennessee and the road from GA to downtown Chattanooga was not in the state highway system until US 27 replaced US 41W in 1934.
By 1936, TN 27 was removed from Old Jasper Rd north of S. Pittsburg; Shady Grove Rd in Sequatchie; W Bell Ave in N. Chattanooga
My guess is that TN 27 was removed from Glover Hill Rd in Jasper in 1954.
In response to the 1968 Federal Highway Act, Tennessee requested an interstate corridor along TN 27 from I-24 Jasper to Alabama. This was not approved.
Between 1974-83, TN 27 was rerouted in Chattanooga to follow Market St past Main St, instead heading east on 20th/Washington/23rd back to Rossville Blvd. The old route had used Main east to Rossville Blvd.

In 1980, TN 27 was removed from a bit of Magnolia St and abandoned routing at the Sequatchie river west of Powells Crossroads.
In 1983, TN 27 was moved onto I-24 from Kimball east several miles, then replaced TN 28 to Powells Crossroads. The old route remained US 72 into Jasper, US 41 north a bit, then TN 28 Temp (now Valley View Hwy) to Whitwell and TN 283 east to Powells Crossroads.

Posting: TN 28 is secondary routing from Powells Crossroads south to I-24 and primary everywhere else; however, TN 27 is posted only from I-24 to US 127 near Signal Mtn.
TN 27 is not posted on the two bits of routing not concurrent with a US route in the City of Chattanooga (and is in fact misidentified as TN 8 from I-24 there).
Secret US Route Overlay: US 72 (4.2 mi)
US 76 (0.7 mi)
US 27 (3.2 mi)
Comment: TN 27 is part of a non-sensical string of state routes AL 2-TN 27-GA 1-FL 63; otherwise, provides a back door routing from Jasper to Chattanooga (using TN 28 to Powells Crossroads), though there is a squirrely segment east of Powells Crossroads.
