Creation: Appeared in 1941 as a route swap with TN 30, running from TN 30 (now S, Jackson St) east of Athens to US 411 Englewood. This is the 2nd TN 39.
| Adjustments: In 1951, TN 39 was straightened out, leaving behind: Old Englewood Rd/County Rd 446; Old Athens-Englewood Rd; County Rd 567; County Rd 430. In 1958, TN 39 was rerouted to the new TN 30 alignment soutn of Athens, leaving behind more Old Englewood Rd In 1983, TN 39 was extended both directions: west with TN 30 into Athens, then replacing TN 2 Bus southwest to Riceville, then after a brief US 11 overlay extended west to I-75. TN 39 east was extended north briefly with US 411 before heading east to TN 68 (now Bank St) outside Tellico Plains. About 1990, TN 39 east was truncated to the new TN 68 alignment, leaving behind Mecca Pike.

TN 39 #1: An original state highway that ran from TN 2 (now TN 305) Athens southeast to Etowah, then south through Benton to the Georgia line below Ocoee.
About 1926, TN 39 was removed from Lowery Rd/Reynolds Bridge Rd/Welcome Valley Rd/Ward Rd between Ocoee and Benton. instead TN 39 headed north out of Ocoee to Benton Station and replacing TN 60 into Benton. In 1929, TN 39 was removed from Etowah Rd north of Benton. Also removed from long-abandoned alignments that gently went back and forth across today's US 411 until the Hiawassee River. In 1939, TN 39 was truncated to Etowah leaving behind TN 33 from Georgia to Etowah. Today this is US 411 from Georgia to Etowah except: Mull Rd and Barton Station Rd into Benton. In 1941, the remaining TN 39 was renumbered as part of TN 30. Etowah to Athens used 8th St/Pennsylvania Ave/Old Athens-Etowah Rd (split by the airport now)/S Jackson St
