Creation: Appeared in 1923 as an original state route, running from TN 34-36 (Roan at Walnut) Johnson City to TN 37 (Elk Ave at F St) Elizabethton
| Adjustments: In 1927 or 1928, TN 67 was extended south with TN 37 to Hampton, then northeast as new routing to TN 34 (now US 421) Mountain City, then followed TN 34 east to Trade before heading east to the North Carolina line. In 1931, TN 67 was rebuilt from Butler to Mountain City, leaving behind Smith-Dugger Rd; Lowell Stalcup/Doeville Rd/Old Hwy 67 through Doeville; Old Stage Rd to Pandora; Stage Coach Loop to Damascus; Old Butler Rd; Between 1935-37, TN 67 west was truncated from central Johnson City to TN 36 (now Roan St). About 1946, TN 67 had to be rerouted to avoid the newly created Watauga Lake. Starting at the southwest corner of the lake, the original route is fully underwater about 15 miles all the way to Red Hill Rd approaching Butler. Sometime in the 1950s, TN 67 was straightened out north out of Hampton. The only surviving segment is Mill Pond Rd in the Valley Forge area. The quite winding alignment where it crosses the Doe River twice is completely abandoned. In 1954, TN 67 was placed on the new US 421 bypass of Mountain City leaving behind TN 91 Main St plus Church St (now both roads are TN 418); Tn 67 was also removed from Crossroads Dr between Mountain City and just east of TN 167 In 1956, US 421/TN 67 was rebuilt east of current TN 167 and removed from Rhea Rd (no longer connects to)/Old Prison Camp Rd; Dowell Loop; P Snyder Rd; Drakes Creek Loop In 1966, TN 67 was removed from 1st St in Hampton. About 1969, TN 67 was extended west to TN 81.
By the mid 1970s, TN 67 was given one-way pairs in Elizabethton using F and G Sts between Roan and Lynn (original route used G-Roan-F).
TN 67 original route to Elizabethton 1938 Carter County
TN 67 one way splits in Elizabethton 1975 Carter County In 1973, TN 67 was removed from Sycamore/Johnson/State Line/S. Pine St leaving Elizabethton to the south and instead routed east on Elk to the new US 19E routing In the early to mid-1980s, TN 67 between Johnson City and Milligan College became TN 67 Temp. At this time TN 67 was also removed from G St into Elizabethton and moved to US 321/TN 91 Elk Ave.
TN 67 becomes TN 67 Temp west of Milligan and moved to new Elizabethton routings 1985 Carter County In 1986-87, TN 67 was removed from TN 67 Temp and placed on the newly constructed US 321 expressway from Johnson City to TN 91. TN 67 Temp became Twin Oaks Dr and Milligan Hwy. TN 67 from Milligan College northeast to the new expressway became an extended TN 359.
TN 67 moved to new US 321 expressway 2007 Carter County Posting: Posted as secondary from TN 81 to Johnson City and from Trade to NC; posted as primary everywhere else The overlay with US 321 is fully posted throughout, despite being its "secret" state route designation. The overlay with US 421 is unposted Secret US Route Overlay: US 321 (24.6 mi) Comment: TN 67 connects Johnson City-Elizabethton-Hampton-Mountain City. TN 67 serves 15 miles worth of Watauga Lake shoreline. The northeast tip of Tennessee's routings of 67-91-133 make no sense to me whatsoever. TN 133 should replace TN 91 to Elizabethton TN 91 should replace TN 67 to TN 159 TN 67 should replace TN 159 TN 362 should replace TN 91 west to Johnson City |
