Creation: Approved as a new US route thst initially began at US 64-231 (now US 64 Bus) Fayetteville heading north with TN 50 to Lewisburg; TN 106 to Nashville; US 70S into downtown, US 41 north out of downtown, TN 65 through Springfield and into Kentucky.
Adjustments: In Nov 1953, AASHO approved extending US 431 south with US 231 from Fayetteville into Alabama. About 1956, US 431 was put on its current routing from today's Frisco Ln south through Springfield on Memorial Blvd. The old route is abandoned to the east adjacent to the quarry and N Main St through Springfield. About 1960, US 431 was rerouted in Nashville to leave Broadway at 8th, then use the new James Robertson Pkwy. US 431 previously left Broadway at 1st Ave S to Deadrick St though signage remained on Broadway at 2nd for another decade or so. In 1962, US 431 was given its bypass of Lewisburg. The old route may have briefly been US 431 Bus but by 1964 this was just Franklin Ave into town, plus US 31A on 2nd St. Commerce St remained part of TN 50 (now US 431 Bus today). In 1965, US 431 was removed from Deaderick St and N. 1st St and placed on the current viaduct over Cumberland River to nearly I-24, then placed on 5th St/Spring St/Dickerson Pike. Around 1966, US 431 was rerouted to accomodate the I-65/265 (now I-24/65) interchange by looping north to the Fern Ave overpass, then back south down the east frontage road to get back to White's Creek Pike. Between 1982-85, US 431 was rerouted to leave White's Creek Pike (some of this is now Baptist World Center Dr) at W. Trinity Ln to head east to US 31W-41.
In 1987, TN US 431 was removed from the substantial Old Hwy 432 between Springfield and the Davidson County line. Around 1988, US 431 was placed on TN 397 around the east of Franklin, leaving behind US 431 Business.
