Creation: Tennessee started referring to the Murfreesboro to Sparta highway as US 70S by the fall of 1927, despite the road having just been christened as US 270. AASHO approved this change in mid-1929, including adding it to US 41 to meet back up with US 70 in Nashville at 2nd and Peabody.

US 41 and US 270 Nashville to Sparta via Murfreesboro 1927 National Map
US 70S Nashville to Sparta via Murfreesboro 1931 Clasons Adjustments: In 1936-37, US 70S was rerouted in Nashville. It changed from Lafayette/2nd ending at Peabody to use Lafayette/2nd/Peabody/1st to end at Hermitage. Also in 1935, AASHO changed US 70S to US 70A as part of moving the US 70N-70S east split to Crossville.
US 70S extended from Sparta to Crossville but renumbered as US 70A 1935 Official By 1939, US 70S was removed from Old McMinnville Rd/abandoned routing east of Woodbury; also Bridge Builders Rd near McMinnville In 1939, US 70S was restored over US 70A. Also, US 70S was extended west with US 70 through Nashville via 1st/Broadway/West End to then replace Belle Meade to its current western endpoint (the route had been removed from Brookmont Terrace by this time). The eastern end was at the Sparta Dr/West Avenue intersection. When US 70N was extended west through Nashville, it was co-signed with US 70S in western Nashville. Here's a 1951 photo (zoom way in). By this time, US 70S was removed from Old Hwy Rd in De Rossett; Arthur Seagraves Rd/Glade Creek Rd at Smith Chapel
US 70S replaces US 70A and extends west of Nashville 1940 Official In the 1940s, US 70S was removed from Post Rd/Old Post Rd/Commodore Dr and South Cir west out of McMinnville. Between 1944-48, US 70S was rerouted in Nashville to use Lafayette/8th/Broadway/West End.
In 1952, AASHO finally officially recognized US 70S as the routing from Nashville to Crossville via Murfreesboro/Sparta. About 1953, US 70S was removed from W. College St out of Murfreesboro and the lengthy Old Nashville Hwy to La Vergne. US 70S used part of today's Goodman Cir.
Between 1952-55, US 70S was removed from Main St through Pleasant Hill In the mid 1950s, US 70S was rerouted in Murfreesboro. Originally it used College/Spring/Main. Now, US 70S used Broad/Dr King/Lasseter/Main
Between 1956-58, US 70S was removed from an abandoned loop in far eastern White County; Old State Hwy 1 in western Cumberland County; Old State Rd in Smiths Chapel About 1958 (bridge date), US 70S was removed from Old Highway 70 from Claysville through Pomona to nearly Crossville. About 1959 (bridge date), US 70S was removed from Sparta Dr in Crossville. This changed the eastern endpoint to the current Sparta Hwy/West Avenue intersection. Sources are scarce, but US 70S may have been removed from Gaines St/Country Club Rd east out of Sparta, plus the Old US 70 loop at the east end of that between 1959-62. In Dec 1962 (AASHO), US 70S east was truncated to Sparta. Sparta to Crossville became part of US 70 again.
US 70S truncated back to Sparta 1964 Official Between 1960-64, US 70S was removed from Old Murfreesboro Rd in Una. By 1967, US 70S was given one-way splis in McMinnville. EB used the original routing of Main/Sparta, while WB used Morford. Around the mid-1970s, US 70S was straightened out in eastern Cannon County leaving behind several abandoned alignments, plus Elkins Cir and Lincoln Ln Between 1978-81, US 70S was moved to the TN 1 Byp around McMinnville. The old route through town remained TN 1 (now TN 380). Between 1982-86, US 70S was added to TN 111 to bypass Maybury St in Sparta (remained TN 1) to its current end at US 70. About 1989, US 70S was removed from Old Rock Island Rd between McMinnville and Campaign. The southern bit of this became part of TN 288. Between 1990-92, US 70S was removed from Old Woodbury Pike through Kitrell; a bit of US 70S; Old Woodbury Pike through Readyville; Murfressboro Rd through Woodbury. About 1995, US 70S was removed from Lasseter/Main from Murfreesboro through Kittrel. Also about 1995, US 70S was removed from C O Hines Rd near Campaign; Rock Island Rd through Rock Island (became TN 136); McMinnville Hwy through Welling and Doyle.
About 2013, US 70S was removed from Old Nashville Hwy/(no longer connects to) Airport Rd east of Centertown to nearly McMinnville. US 70S temporarily used TN 287 to get between old and new alignments. About 2015, US 70S was removed from McMinnville Hwy and Old Nashville Hwy west of Centertown.
