Creation: Appeared December 31, 1928 (AASHO) replacing WV 46 from US 50 New Creek to Keyser, then as new primary routing across the Potomac River to Maryland.
|
Adjustments: In September 1934 (AASHO), US 220 was extended east with US 50 into Hampshire County, then followed WV 28 south to Petersburg, then replaced WV 28 south through Franklin and into Virginia.
In 1950 (bridge date), US 220 was placed on a new alignment around Keyser to a new Potomac bridge, removing US 220 from CR 220/5 Harley Stagger Sr Drive, Newton St, and S. Main St all the way through downtown Keyser.
In 1958 (bridge date), US 220/WV 4-28 was removed from CR 220/8 and CR 2 from Old Fields northward.
In 1962 (bridge date), US 220 was removed from CR 220/9 in Ruddle. In October 1978 (AASHTO), US 220 was rerouted in the New Creek area, taking over CR 7 which cuts off a couple miles. The old route was supposed to become US 220 ALT but instead was US 50 over to New Creek and WV 972 (now WV 93) north back to the new US 220 routing.
Improvements: Fully paved upon inception; no multilane segments. Comment: There is no direct connection between US 220 and US 48 in Moorefield - one has to take WV 55 between them. |
