Previous WV 35's: 1927 ROUTE LOG WV 53: 0 - 0 WV 58: 25 - 25 |
WV 35: Appeared in 1922 as new primary highway, running from WV 11 (now WV 53) near Elizabeth southeast to WV 16 Grantsville.
In 1924, WV 35 was placed on a more direct routing as new primary routing to end at WV 14 Elizabeth, leaving behind today's CR 53/3, CR 3/2, lengthy CR 3 through Cool Spring to Munday; Wirt CR 51 and Calhoun CR 1
Between 1929-31, WV 35 was extended east as new primary routing to end at WV 5 (now US 33-119) Glenville. In 1932, WV 35 was extended east replacing WV 18 through Burnsville to Napier, then followed US 19 to Ireland, then replaced more WV 18 southeast to end at WV 20 Cleveland.
In 1935, WV 35 east was rerouted at Ireland to follow US 19 further up a couple miles, then extended east as new primary routing to end at WV 20 Rock Cave. The old route to Cleveland became CR 50, CR 50/6, and CR 20/21.
WV 35 rerouted from Elizabeth to Rock Cave 1935 Official In 1938, WVDOH studied requesting replacing WV 35 from US 19 to WV 20 with an unspecified US route number. It is unclear if they formally requested this or not but it obviously did not happen. In 1938, WV 35 was renumbered as WV 5. It remains WV 5 today except: CR 5/10 at Burnsville; CR 5/11 and abandoned routing covered by Burnsville Lake. Some of old WV 35 from US 19 Napier northwestward still exists as an access road; WV 4 from Napier to Rock Cave except between Bullstown and Falls Mill the old route followed the Little Kanawha River much more closely. Surviving pieces are the access road to the Picnic Area at Bulltown and the old road from the Falls Mill side to the south dip in the river.
