Creation: WV 62 was designated in 1922 as new primary routing, running from WV 3 (now WV 101) Huntington to WV 5 (now WV 62) Mason. This is the only WV 62.
| Adjustments: In 1931, WV 62 south was truncated to Point Pleasant with the route to Huntington becoming part of WV 5 (now WV 2 except WV 62 used CR 2/12, 2/13, and 2/14 in Green Bottom; CR 2/10 in Lesage). Also in 1931, WV 62 north was extended from Mason to Mt. Alto, replacing part of WV 5. In 1932, WV 62 was extended from Mt Alto to Evans, replacing more WV 5.
In late 1937, WV 62 was truncated from Evans back to today's WV 62 SPUR in Mason, replaced by US 33. Today this is WV 62 Mason to Mt Alto (except CR 19 New Haven eastward which is cutoff by the power plant and no longer connects back to the highway); WV 331 Mt Alto to Cottageville; CR 33/17 and CR 5 Cottageville to Evans. Also in 1937 (bridge date), WV 62 was removed from CR 62/24 Spillman/Letart Rds near West Columbia and CR 62/26 in Clifton. In 1942 (bridge date), WV 62 was removed from Old Pt Pleasant Rd near CR 62/21. About 1970, WV 62 was extended from Point Pleasant to end at WV 25 Charleston. All of this was a replacement for US 35.
In 2004, WV 62 was extended from Mason to I-77 at Ripley, replacing US 33.
Improvements: By 1923, WV 62 was paved from Huntington to the Mason County line; a couple miles leding to Mason In 1924, WV 62 was paved from the Cabell-Mason line to Mercers Bottom. In 1925, WV 62 was paved from Pt Pleasant to Mason in 1926 or 1927, WV 62 was paved from Mercers Bottom to Gallipolis Ferry WV 62's contraction caused it to be fully paved since 1937. WV 62 has no multilane segments Comment: The choice to keep extending WV 62 in all directions is a little baffling. It is nearly 100 miles long but the endpoints are only 39 miles apart directly. |
