History:
Some timeline information comes from the I-485 entry of the Interstate Guide.
The Charlotte Beltway was on the drawing board as early as the mid 1970s. However, the first use of the number 485 came when AASHTO approved a request to assign 485 on the beltway from I-77 Pineville east and north to I-85 near UNC-Charlotte.
The first segment of today's I-485 to open was from NC 51 northwest to US 521 (now just Pineville Rd) in 1990.
In Feb 1991, the freeway (built and unbuilt) from I-77 Pineville east to US 74 Matthews was approved as FUTURE I-485.
In late 1994 (per Matt Steffora), I-485 was extended both directions to be open from I-77 to Rea Rd.
In Oct 1996, AASHTO approved the beltway from I-77 Pineville clockwise past I-85, I-77 Huntersville, and back to I-85 UNC-Charlotte as part of I-485.
In Dec 1996 (NCDOT), I-485 was assigned from I-77 near Pineville northwest to I-85.
In mid 1997 (per Matt Steffora), I-485 was extended both directions to be open from NC 49 to US 74.
In Aug 1998 (per Matt Steffora), the I-485 freeway was extended from NC 49 northwest to Arrowood Rd.
In May 1999 (per Matt Steffora), the I-485 freeway was opened between I-85 and NC 49 in the UNCC-Charlotte area. This utilized the I-85/US 29 connector that dated to I-85's completion through the area decades earlier.
In June 1999, FUTURE I-485 became actual I-485 from I-77 Pineville east to US 74 Matthews.
In late 1999, I-485 was extended from US 74 Matthews northeast to Idlewild Rd.
In mid 2000, I-485 was opened from Idlewild Rd to Lawyers Rd.

I-485's remaining segment from NC 115 east to I-85 is under construction and scheduled to open in late 2014 or so.
The south side of the beltway is already overcrowded and lane additions are coming.
