VA 314
Photo: VA 314 from SR 685 westbound (photo by Mapmikey, Jan 2007)
From:  Blacksburg (Montgomery County)
To:  Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg (Montgomery County)
Total Length:  10.04 miles

Creation:  Unknown. The earliest CTB Minutes reference I can find is Sept 1937. Virginia Tech was alloted 2.25 miles in the July 1932 CTB Minutes. This is the 5th VA 314.
Adjustment:  In Sept 1937 (CTB), 1.5 miles were added to the Virginia Tech grounds.
In Aug 1947 (CTB), the road from Main St (now US 460 Bus) to the Parade Grounds (0.25 miles) was added to VA 314.
Based on the 3/55 CTB, about 2 miles worth of roads at Virginia Tech were added to VA 314 between 1947-55.
In March 1955 (CTB), 0.479 miles of driveways were deleted, while a 0.285 mile road northwest to connect to SR 685 (now VA 412) was added to VA 314.
In July 1965 (CTB), 0.83 miles of VA 314 were abandoned while 3.22 new miles of roads at Virginia Tech were added to VA 314.
In March 1969 (CTB), a new 0.45 mile road was built between Duckpond Rd and the Smithfield Plantation House and became part of VA 314.
In Aug 1970 (CTB), 1.25 miles of new roads were added to VA 314, while 0.176 miles of existing VA 314 were abandoned.
In Nov 1971 (CTB), 0.369 miles of Southgate Drive, 0.089 miles of Kent St, 0.085 miles of College Ave, and 0.20 miles of Perry St were all removed from VA 314 as they were inside the corporate limits of Blacksburg.
In Dec 2017 (aaroads forum), VA 314 was rerouted on Southgate Dr to a new alignment to meet US 460 at a newly constructed DDI interchange south of the previous location.
Posting:  Fully posted at US 460 Bypass. VA 314 used to be posted up one side and down the other (photo by HB Elkins) east of this jct.; also posted with a shield on SR 685 just west of US 460 Byp-VA 412 jct (confirmed still present Dec 2019)
Comment:  Many roads in the confines of Virginia Tech. Some of these roads may still be unpaved...
Appeared on official maps since 1988.

VA 314 #1: Appeared November 1924 (CTB Minutes) as new routing. Ran from VA 12-31 (current US 1/US 58 Bus/VA 47) South Hill towards the northeast an unspecified distance.
The May 1925 CTB Minutes describe the road from Alberta southwest towards South Hill being christened as VA 31. Today this is part of US 1 but also used Pace Drive and VA 138/SR 638 towards Forksville. I have yet to find a map that shows this short-lived route.
VA 314 #2:  Appears in the October 1926 VDOT Route Log under the VA 327 entry which said that 327 was made 314, then part of VA 38.
Because 314 #1 was around until 5/25 and 314 #3 was created 4/26, this means 314 #2 was extremely short-lived and likely never posted this way. It became VA 38.
VA 314 was in two pieces. The southern piece began at VA 31 (now SR 607) Falmouth, and followed SR 1001, then US 17 corridor into Fauquier County except the following loops: SR 700; SR 750 at Berea; SR 746; SR 704; SR 705 Hartwood; SR 706; SR 813 Goldvein. There was a roughly 6.5 mile gap in Fauquier County, then VA 314 used the US 17 corridor to end at VA 32 (now US 15-29) Opal except for SR 718/634 Morrisville; SR 841; SR 839; SR 805/656 Bealeton; SR 837 Liberty. I have never seen a map show this VA 314.
VA 314 #3:  Appeared as new routing in April 1926 (CTB Minutes) as a spur from VA 31 (current US 1) to Mt. Vernon.
This was renumbered as VA 710 in 1929. Today it is the northern half of VA 235.

VA 314 #4:  Appeared in August 1928. Ran from VA 18 (curr US 29 Bus) Lovingston to Shipman, then Wingina. Up to Shipman was part of VA 18, the rest was new routing.
In July 1932 (CTB Minutes), VA 314 was extended east 10.87 miles towards Buckingham, ending at VA 306 (now SR 602).
VA 314 was renumbered as part of VA 56 in July 1933. It is still VA 56 except between Lovingston and Shipman VA 314 used SR 745 near Lovingston and SR 747 Marietta Ln in Shipman, plus abandoned Railroad St.
