Creation: Appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of SC 111, running from US 29 Gaffney northeast to North Carolina heading for Shelby. This is the 2nd SC 18.

Original Gaffney routing of SC 18 and SC 18 ALT 1938 Cherokee County Adjustments: In 1940, SC 18 was extended southwest as new primary routing to end at SC 9 Pacolet. SC 18 I believe was placed onto SC 18 ALT Limestone St at this time and the routing over Logan St became SC 18 ALT. In 1942, SC 18 was extended southwest as more new primary routing to end at SC 56 below Glenn Springs.
Between 1941-52, SC 18 was removed from Victor Park and Sunny Acres Rds in Pacolet and placed on today's SC 150. Between 1951-54, SC 18 was removed from S-11-646 River Hill Rd north of the Broad River. In 1959, SC 18 was moved onto its current routing between I-85 Exits 95-96. SC 18 had been using Fatz Rd and what is now the I-85 SB carriageway and Wilcox Ave In 1960, SC 18 swapped routings south of Gaffney, with SC 18 replacing SC 11 to end at US 176/SC 9 Jonesville and the old routing to SC 56 became SC 150. Between 1964-67, SC 18 was put back onto Logan to SC 11 then south on Frederick St. Limestone became SC 18-150 CONN and part of SC 150, although some parts of Limestone are posted as if it is SC 18... In 1989, SC 18 was extended south replacing US 176 and US 176 Bus through Union to its current south end.
Improvements: SC 18 has been paved in all segments since designation. In 1954 or 1955, SC 18 became multilane on its US 29 (current I-85 SB carriageway + Wilcox Ave) multiplex. In 2007 or 2008 SC 18 is shown on maps to be multilaned from Limestone/Logan to I-85 Exit 95, but I think it was like that sooner. SC 18 is also multilane on Frederick St in Gaffney from O'Neal St to Floyd Baker Blvd. Comment: SC 18 serves as the main way to get from I-85 NB to Shelby, NC. There is a signed SC 18 TRUCK that covers the entirety of the Union Bypass and the US 176/SC 18 CONN. The replacement of US 176 Business caused the removal of a US 176 cutout shield at SC 49. | Previous SC 18's:

SC 18 #1: An original state route running from SC 20 Abbeville northwest to Anderson then west to SC 17 (now US 76-123) Westminster. It is unclear if SC 18 went further.
By 1923, SC 18 was extended north to SC 2 (now SC 28) Walhalla. In 1925 or 1926, SC 18 was rerouted at Westminster to instead head northwest as new primary routing to Georgia via the Long Creek area. The old route to Walhalla became SC 183.
In 1933, SC 18 west was truncated to US 76/SC 13 Westminster, with the road over to Georgia becoming US 76.
SC 18 truncated to Westminster and replaced by US 76 1933 Official If SC 18 ever used S-37-642 Hampton St out of Westminster, it stopped doing so by 1935. In 1938, SC 18 was renumbered as SC 24 from Westminster to Anderson and SC 28 from Anderson to Abbeville. Today it is still SC 24 except SC 18 used routing under Lake Hartwell and a little S-4-34 Whitehall Rd; Old Port Rd/Abercrombie Rd in the Anderson Airport area; Webb St/Market St into downtown Anderson. SC 18 is still SC 28 except: SC 28 Bus Anderson; Old Abbeville Hwy south of S-4-141 Anderson; S-1-167 and SC 184 in Antreville; SC 28-71 CONN and SC 71 in Abbeville. By 1929, SC 22 was removed from S-36-48/S-36-301 east of Chappells and an abandoned loop at Little River Church west of Silverstreet; also removed from Old Ninety Six Hwy and Foundry Rd east out of Greenwood. SC 22's new west end was put on new routing east of the railroad before cutting west at today's US 25-178 Bus/SC 10 jct. It appears that by 1929, SC 22 was removed from Evans St Ext (now SC 200 CONN) in Winnsboro and instead used today's SC 34 to today's US 321 Bus south to Winnsboro. In 1933, SC 22 was removed from S-20-39 Peays Ferry Rd in Winnsboro and I think S-20-56 Washington St and abandoned routing northeast to the current SC 200/S-20-41 intersection. If SC 22 ever used Cross St and (no longer connects to) Floyd Rd east of Ninety Six it stopped doing so by 1935. In 1936 or 1937, SC 22 was placed on a new bypass west of Great Falls, leaving behind SC 22 ALT (now S-12-27 and S-12-20). SC 22's new northern endpoint appears to have been at today's US 21/SC 99 jct.
