Creation:  First appeared in 1939 from Memphis to Nashville as part of the long-term national planning leading to the Interstate system. The rest of it appeared in the 1943 Interregional Highway System. Was numbered as I-40 in August, 1957.
Adjustments:  Per Wikipedia, which references newspaper articles, the first segment of I-40 to open was the Magnolia Ave Expressway in Knoxville which ran from Unaka St to Gay St and was fully open in 1955.
In 1961, I-40 was open from US 70 near Brownsville to US 70 east of Jackson; also from the Clinch River (temporary at-grade connection to US 70) to Papermill Rd (now TN 332) west of Knoxville.
In 1962, I-40 was open from TN 96 near Fairview to US 70N (now US 70) west of Nashville; also from TN 56 Silver Point to US 70N Cookeville; also from TN 66 ALT (now TN 113) Dandridge to US 25W-70-411 Newport.

In May 1982, Tennessee requested I-40 replace I-240 from around the north of Memphis to I-40/240 east of Memphis. AASHTO approved this in July 1982. Tennessee official maps showed an I-40/240 overlay until at least 1989. The former partially completed I-40 heading for Overton Park was removed from the state highway system altogether and is today's Sam Cooper Blvd, which has since been extended as a parkway to US 64-70-79 East Parkway. I-40 through Overton Park was a contrversal routing from the outset of the interstate system. Opposition and lawsuits culminated in a Supreme Court ruling against the routing as proposed. After determining that feasible alternatives were too expensive, I-40 was relocated to I-240 around to the north.

Comments:  The rerouting of I-40 in Memphis in 1982 resulted in a 3-mile longer route. Mileage based exit numbers were introduced a few years earlier. TDOT elected not to renumber 120+ exits nor 451 mile markers.
The Bridgewater Rd and Gallaher Hill Rd half-interchanges project resulted in the removal of a direct diamond interchange with Walker Springs Rd.
The Unaka St interchange at original west end of the Magnolia St Expwy appears to have been removed in the early 1970s
The TN 62 interchange was removed in 1982 with the expanded I-275 interchange.
