Creation: US 70 was an original US route in December 1926, added to TN 1 from Arkanas at Memphis to Nashville; with TN 24 from Nashville to Lebanon; with TN 26 from Lebanon to Sparta; with TN 1 from Sparta to Knoxville; with TN 9 from Knoxville to North Carolina near Wolf Creek.
Adjustments: Tennessee in Nov 1927 started showing US 70 from Lebanon to Sparta as US 70N on maps. AASHO eventually noticed US 70N on Tennessee maps and accepted their belated request to make this change in May 1929

US 70N Nashville to Sparta via Lebanon 1931 Clasons US 70 may have briefly used also Lawndale Rd to Lawndale; Kidwell Ln (no longer connects to)/S Cripple Creek Rd/Ladd Ridge Rd but stopped doing so by 1927. In 1927 or 1928 (per official route log), US 70 was removed from current TN 139 to Strawberry Plains; Old Andrew Johnson Hwy; abandoned routing/Old Strawberry Plains Pike just west of the Jefferson County line; a bit of current US 11E; Strawberry Plains Pike to Trentville. Strawberry Plains to Trentville became an extended US 511. About 1928 (bridge dates), US 70 was straightehed out northeast out Jackson, leaving behind to the east from about Lawrence Switch Rd to Watson Rd; a bit of Watson Rd; abandoned routing halfway to US 412 Bus; abandoned routing to the west from New Deal Rd to a little south of Spain Rd About 1928 (bridge dates), US 70 was removed from Ledsinger Rd and Old Stage Rd from above Terry to nearly Huntingdon. US 70 may have been using Parker Store Rd back to the current US 70 because the modern routing may have opened in 1924. If that was not opened, then US 70 was also removed from abandoned routing across Middle Fork Deer River; Providence Cemetery Rd/Terry Rd to Terry If US 70 ever used Fugate Rd between Del Rio and Wolf Creek it stopped doing so by 1928. If US 70 ever used Kingston Springs Rd/today's TN 249 through Kingston Springs, it stopped doing so by 1929. By 1929, US 70 was given its current route from Crossville to Crab Orchard. The old route used 1st St/Chestnut Hill Rd (except Blevin Rd in Dorton), Gate Rd, Eroh Rd until it reaches I-40; abandoned routing that is largely occupied by I-40 that crossed Daddy Creek at the WB rest area; the part of Main St south of I-40 that is not parallel to it; Pea Ridge Rd/Main St into Crab Orchard About 1929, US 70 was placed on its current alignment out of Memphis to Galloway. The old route used today's 2nd St north to Willis Ave east which used to transition to Jackson Ave (configuration at US 51 is different now); TN 14 to TN 15, except US 70 used Old Austin Peay Hwy; TN 15 to Bartlett; Sycamore View Rd north to Memphis-Arlington Rd east; at about Kirby-Whitten Pkwy, the road used to head due east to connect to a cutoff segment of Memphis-Arlington Rd; Oak St north to Memphis-Arlington Rd east to Arlington (including TN 177 dogleg); Douglass St, Polk St, Walker St, Chester St through Arlington; TN 205 north then Galloway Levee Rd to current US 70 Galloway.
Also about 1929, US 70 was removed from Old Knoxville hwy and Thinwood Dr in Newport If US 70 ever used Old Blacktop Rd and Long St into McEwen, it stopped doing so by 1930. About 1930, US 70 was removed from Old Asheville Hwy east of Newport; Manning Chapel Rd/current TN 340 in Bridgeport If US 70 ever used Lafayette/Piedmont Rds west of Dandridge it stopped doing so in 1930. Also about 1930, US 70 was removed from Old Clinton Pike in the Bell Bridge area; Old Vasper Rd in Vasper west to the Baptist Church; Old 25 Loop near Habersham US 70's original route leaving Jackson appears to have been Main/Hays/Preston/Springcreek (now Whitehall). By 1930, it changed to Main/Royal/Lexington/Elizabeth/Whitehall Also about 1930, US 70 was removed from Manor Lodge Rd/Trotters Landing/Crockett Landing Rd; ferry across the Tennessee River; Old State Road 1 through Hustburg and Plant; Bakerville Rd to Waverly By 1930, US 70 was removed from Old Bon Air Rd near Bon Air (no longer connects to)/Lake Rd (no longer connects to)/lovejoy Rd (no longer connects to)/Broom Rd/Eastland Rd to De Rossett; W and E Ravenscroft Rd through Ravenscroft Also by 1930, US 70 was removed from Bluff Rd and Old Rockwood Hwy between the Midtown area and the original Clinch River bridge to Kingston; In 1930 or 1931, US 70 was given a direct route between McEwen and Dickson. The original route was Long St/Railroad St N/Melrose St in McEwen; Old Nashville Hwy/Old Number 1; today's TN 46 to Dickson About 1931, US 70 was given its current routing between Ozone and US 27 south of Rockwood. The old route used Ozone Rd through Daysville; Pig Path Rd (no longer connects to)/Mt. Vernal Rd to Mt. Vernon; Westal Rd until it parallels I-40; abandoned routing south of I-40; Westal Rd where it leaves I-40 to cross TN 299; Airpot Rd/Furnace Ave/Rockwood St to Rockwood In 1931 or 1932, US 70 was rerouted in Nashville from West End/Church/8th/Broadway/4th/Peabody ending at 2nd where US 70N-70S split, to West End/Church/8th/Union/6th/Broadway/2nd, still ending at Peabody where US 70N-70S split.
Also in 1931 or 1932, US 70 was given a more direct path between Dandridge and Newport. The old route used Coops Rd/Carson Springs Rd, Clevenger Cutoff, Old Sevierville Hwy/Bridge Chapel Rd, Old US 411 and US 411 segments to Chestnut Hill; first couple miles of TN 92; underwater routing; Hills Chapel Rd, a little more TN 92; underwater routing; E. Main St in Dandridge
Also in 1931 or 1932, US 70 was rerouted in Knoxville westward via Magnolia, Broadway and Henley St to Main. The old route used Magnolia, Gay, and Main.
By 1932, TN 1 was removed from Old Harding Pike near Belle Meade In 1933, US 70 was removed from Carter School Rd/Strawberry Plains Pike in Trentville. In 1935, AASHO changed US 70N back to US 70 and also rerouted it at Lebanon to follow TN 24 through Carthage and Cookeville to meet back up with TN 1 at Crossville. TN 26 remained on the Lebanon-Sparta routing. This is again US 70 except: Taylor Rd loop at Cherry Valley; Main St through Watertown; Old Sparta Hwy east of Watertown; Old Alexandria Pike nearby; Main St/High St in Alexandria; Old Liberty Rd, lengthy old Hwy 53 down to Dodd Store; Main St through Liberty and Dowelltown, Old Snow Hill Rd (3 segments); Main St through Smithville, Midway Rd through Midway; abandoned alignments to the west of 70 approaching Caney Fork River, a little underwater routing, Old State Route 26, Jack Hudson Rd; east of the Caney Fork River: Ollie Billings/Howard Redmon Rds, Peeled Chestnut Ln, Old Smithville Hwy S, TN 136, Old Smithville Hwy N (cutoff by TN 111), Clarks Mill Dr into Sparta

By 1935, US 70 was removed from Hornberg Dr (no longer connects to)/Old Kingston Pike in Knoxville. Between 1931-36, US 70 was removed from Ferguson Dr/underwater routing/original Clinch River bridge/Mill St/Spring St in Kingston; Old Race St By 1936, US 70 was removed from Missioary Grove Church/Coleman Rd in Morris Chapel. By 1938, US 70 was removed from Oak Grove Rd/Old Denmark Rd at Westover west of Jackson About 1938, US 70/TN 24 was removed from Kelly Cir; Badger Ln; Boyd Ln and Waterville Ln (used to connect in a looping abandoned alignment) west of S. Carthage In 1938, US 70 was removed from Northwood Dr between Huntingdon and Rosser; Kee St in Hollow Rock In 1939, US 70S replaced US 70 on the Belle Meade loop west of Nashville (the route had been removed from Brookmont Terrace by this time); also US 70N replaced US 70 from Nashville to Crossville. US 70S replaces US 70 west of Nashville; US 70N replaces US 70 Nashville to Crossville. 1940 Official About 1941, US 70 was given a direct route from Dickson through White Bluff. The old route became TN 46 from Dickson to Burns (now US 70 Bus/TN 46/TN 47); TN 47 from Burns to White Bluff; Church St through White Bluff.
Also about 1941, US 70 was removed from the 4 Old US 70 loops east of White Bluff Between 1943-47, US 70 moved from 2nd St to 3rd St in Downtown Memphis. In 1947, US 70 was removed from Old US 70 just southeast of Camden; Old Route One southeast of Morris Chapel. In 1949, US 70 was placed on the new Memphis-Arkansas bridge, leaving behind the Hanaran Bridge which is still open to foot/bicycle traffic.
Between 1948-56, US 70 was removed from J Bond Ln east of TN 138; also removed from the westernmost 0.2 miles of Wellwood Rd alongside I-40 west of Huntersville About 1950, US 70 was removed from Grooms Rd east of Rosser; Park Ln in Hollow Rock; Old Bruceton Rd and Selber Ln east of Bruceton Between 1941-51, US 70 was moved from Lafayette to Main through central Jackson. Between 1952-55, US 70 was removed from Lockett Rd/Deane Hill Dr in Knoxville; also Newton Ave/Forest Park Blvd/Old Kingston Pike in Knoxville Between 1952-56, US 70 was put on one-way routing through downtown Memphis, with EB using 3rd and WB using 2nd/Calhoun. Also between 1952-56, US 70 was removed from Frye Access Rd near Cedar Grove; Sanders Loop and Tate Loop near Tate; In 1953, US 70 was removed from Kingston Ave/Molyneux St/Kingston Ave through Rockwood; Old kingston Hwy and Old Hwy 70/Post Oak Valley Rd esat of Rockwood; Headwaters Dr/Poland Hollow Rd at the Caney Creek Marina area; Old Hwy 70/Old Midtown Hwy/Keylon Dr/Old Rockwood Hwy west of the Clinch River Kingston; Cumberland St and Kentucky St within Kingston About 1956, US 70 was removed from Holston Dr in eastern Knoxville Between 1957-60, US 70 was removed from more Wellwood Rd to accomodate I-40; also removed from Technology Center Dr/ (no longer connects to) Westover Rd west of Jackson About 1959 (bridge date), the US 70 split into 70N-70S in Crossville was moved from the Sparta Dr/West Avenue intersection to the new Sparta Hwy/West Avenue intersection, replacing aa bit of US 70N. In Dec 1962 (AASHO), US 70 replaced US 70N from Nashville to Lebanon, then was re-added to TN 26 to Sparta, then replaced US 70S to Crossville.
US 70 restored Nashville to Crossville via Sparta 1964 Official Sources are scarce, but US 70 may have still been using Gaines St/Country Club Rd east out of Sparta, plus the Old US 70 loop at the east end of that. If so, it was placed on its current routing by 1967. About 1970, US 70 replaced US 70N on the Belle Meade bypass and into Nashville. Between 1968-74, US 70 was rerouted in Crossville from West/5th/Main/Lantana to just West/Lantana. Main St remains part of US 127.
About 1983, US 70 was routed around Downtown Memphis using Danny Thomas from Union to Crump. The old routing on Union remained TN 3 and 2nd/3rd remained TN 14.
Also about 1983, US 70 replaced TN 1 Byp around Dickson, leaving behind US 70 Bus
Also about 1983, US 70 was placed on the Lebanon bypass, replacing TN 24 Byp. The old route became US 70 Bus.
Between 1981-85, US 70 was placed on one-way splis in central Knoxville - EB used the original Main St routing and WB used Cumberland. Between 1982-85, US 70 was rerouted in Nashville to leave Broadway via one-way pair on 13th/14th to Cedar. This left behind 46th/Murphy Rd/Broadway
Also between 1982-85, US 70 was given its current routing through Jackson via Chester St. Airways/Main/Royal/Lexington/Whitehall was removed from the state highway system.
About 1986, US 70 was placed on the new southern bypass of Camden, leaving behind US 70 Bus.
In 1988, US 70 was placed on the bypass south and east around Huntingdon, leaving behind US 70 Bus.
About 1989, US 70 was removed from Main St through Waverly. A bit of this became TN 13 Spur. In 1995, US 70 was placed on its bypass around the south and east of Brownsville, leaving behind Grand Ave; TN 54 on Main St west of the square; Main St east of the square
In 2007, US 70 was changed to leave Broadway at 5th instead of Magnolia in Knoxville. In 2014, US 70 was rerouted over TN 158 on Neyland Dr, then used Hall of Fame Dr to get back to Magnolia in Knoxville.
